## Goodwill of Orange County ##

Irrelevant Week XXXV to Benefit the Goodwill Fitness Center

Irrelevant Week, a week-long celebration of the Underdog (the final pick of the NFL draft) has once again chosen the Goodwill Fitness Center as one of the beneficiary of the proceeds of the event. The week will culminate with the Lowsman Banquet on June 30, 2010. The idea for this celebration was formulated in 1976 by Irrelevant Week's founder and chief spokesperson, Paul Salata.

“Irrelevant Week events have raised more than $1 million to benefit local Orange County charities for 35 years. More than fifty groups have benefitted since the event’s inception,” said Salata. “This year, the focus is on the Goodwill Fitness Center of Orange County. It’s truly an amazing program making a measurable difference in the lives of men and women with physical disabilities or chronic illness.”

The Goodwill Fitness Center, centrally located in Santa Ana, believes that every person, regardless of physical disability or health status, can benefit from a comprehensive exercise program. With approximately 70,000 people in Orange County living with physical disabilities, the center fills the gap and provides what conventional fitness centers simply cannot. Members have access to state-of-the-art specialized equipment, a range of courses designed for people with disabilities and a qualified, experienced staff. With the Goodwill Fitness Center’s Stay-Fit program, members are able to enhance every day of their lives by improving stamina, muscular strength, flexibility, balance, coordination, body control and greater mobility.

Training with a focus on balance, coordination, motor control and cardiovascular capacity helps the Goodwill Fitness Center members develop and maintain their ability to perform activities of daily living. Specialized exercise programs help members maintain and increase their independence as well as minimize the potential for chronic pain caused by muscle imbalances, muscle atrophy, overuse injuries and disability-specific wear and tear on muscles and joints. Physical activity has also been proven to help reduce secondary health conditions and complications.

The generous support of special events and organizations like Irrelevant Week, gifts of cash and pledges enable the Goodwill Fitness Center to grow its membership base, maintain the quality and level of individualized support for its members and to provide more programs to meet the specific needs of people with disabilities or chronic illness. “When you or your business becomes a sponsor of the 2010 Irrelevant Week, you are ensuring that a portion of the funds raised during this fun and exciting week will go to support one of the most dynamic and relevant causes in Orange County,” said Salata.
